Stonham Barns June 29th - 30th Warning Order

June 29th-30th

The event

We have kindly been invited to take part in the Stonham Barns History Alive Festival and will be one of the largest groups attending the event. Living History, Drill Displays (including Children’s) and Skirmishes will be held on both days, hopefully all regiments will be taking part in all the action. The skirmish scenario is currently under construction!

An Inter- Regimental Living History encampment will be set up all Living History must arrive on the Friday evening or very early (7.30am) on the Saturday and be set up and ready by 9am If you haven’t already booked and wish to have a LH space please send an email to jonathanburden24@gmail.com to book your spot (There’s loads of space)

IMPORTANT No vehicle movement within the showground (Including LH areas) after 9.00am on both days is permitted. In and out of the ECWS campsite is fine though.

IMPORTANT Wristbands will be given out at the guard tent this allows you to carry weapons around as well as grant entry to the showground when not performing. Please make sure you wear these at all times within the event.

The Event will be Open for Public 10.00am– 5.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Stonham Barns event staff have asked if a few members from each re-enactment group, walk around outside the entry gates from time to time to ‘publicise’ the event. There is no rota, but if anyone gets ‘bored’ and wants to stretch their legs please feel free to wander around the adjacent retail village and get noticed. Hopton’s will be doing this, any other Regiments are very welcome to do so as well on their own accord.

Historical Background

Although specifically bearing no major First Civil War significance, nearby Ipswich was a strong Puritan stronghold. In the second civil war however Colchester was involved in major engagements and it had effects on the surrounding areas including the town of Stowmarket which is close by to Stonham. We will use this as a base for the scenario.

Campsite & Facilities

Campsite will be open from Friday Morning 10.00am until Monday 12.00pm, we have a separate campsite to the rest of the reenactors so don’t pitch with them. The ECWS campsite will have toilets, a water point and free showers are available, but on the showground site (2 minute walk). A water point will also be located near the Living History area. Only raised fires are allowed on the camp site and there will be NO wood provided, though you may spot some  close by! There will be a beer barn with a proper bar open for reenactors from 19.00 to 23.00pm on the Friday and for the public 12.00 – 17.00 during the day on Saturday and Sunday.

Location: Stonham Barns (Mid Suffolk Showground), Pettaugh Road, Stonham Aspal, Suffolk IP14 6AT

Car: Stonham Barns is readily signposted from the A1120. For the vast majority of you, you will find the A1120 off the A140. The A14 and A12 are both the main approach roads to the A140. You need to head for the main Stonham Barns entrance.

On entering Stonham Barns continue straight on past the public parking into a car park at the end of the access road on the right-hand side (caravans will be phased by this but bear with it – they are more than used to it – see image below!). Enter that car park as if you were going to park your car and towards the end of the lane you will be marshalled towards the left where you enter a side access entrance to the Showground. Once in the access entrance you will be asked who you are with, when you say ‘ECWS’ you will be asked to continue straight on rather than a hard right into the Showground. Follow the road about 100 yards towards our campsite but mind the last left hand turn which has a large ditch behind it. You’ll know it’s the last left hand turn because they’ll be hazard tape there!

There will be a security guard employed for the whole site during the evenings but it is advised that you keep things zipped up and safe during your stay.

Local Facilities/shops/Pubs

Within the site itself there is a retail village which features a “village store” this is a small shop which has all the essentials you may need. There is also a wide range of other business, restaurants etc. a list of these can be found here.
